Aluminium foil wrap for cooking and preparing food

Aluminium foil is widely used for cooking and preparing food. Aluminium doesn’t just appear in foil: it is the most popular cookware material used by people. Pots and pans are lined with it and it is found in some kitchen utensils like large serving spoons. Copper used to fulfil this role, but over time it’s been replaced by aluminium because it is cheaper to mass produce and easier to clean.

Aluminium tin foil was actually different, as it was made actually out of tin. Pound-for-pound, aluminum covers almost three times more area than tin, so it is easy cost-wise to see why it became popular among producers as a replacement for tin.

Tin foil will sometimes react with highly salted or highly acidic foods, such as tomato sauces to produce aluminum salt, which is harmless, but still unsettling when your dinner guests are watching. The reaction can also create pinholes in the foil.

Avoid this, use plastic wrap instead or put a layer of plastic wrap between the food and the tin foil.

An aluminum foil wrap keeps the food warm, but placing the foil directly on the object or food doesn’t help much. The reason behind this is, if the disposable aluminum foil plate is in contact with the object, the thermal energy would move in the foil itself and might get away, but if the foil is placed a little away from the food then it can properly reflect back the thermal energy and maintain the freshness of the food. So to avoid contact between foil and food, you can add a few layers of butter paper to make air pockets and then add pack in a final layer of aluminum foil.As aluminum is a poor insulator (substance which doesn’t allow passage of heat) so to make the foil more effective, place it (food wrapped in foil) in fiberglass or ceramic tiffin boxes. It doesn’t only keep the food warmer for long, but also keep things cold.It acts as barrier to the oxygen and air which can transfer heat to the cold or frozen food. Bottom line is it helps by maintaining the temperature of the food, be it warm or cold.

Aluminum foil also continues to offer many benefits in home kitchen use:

Keeps out oxygen and preserves the aroma;

Impermeable to moisture and water vapour;

Keeps out light and air;

Odourless;

Non-toxic and corrosion resistant;

Excellent conductor of heat in cooking;

Deadfold – it stays wrapped around food items without needing further sealing;

Hygiene – Unlike plastic, can be thoroughly cleaned.

Some people say that aluminium foil bag is a better choice for wrapping foods for freezer storage than plastic wrap, as it protects better from moisture loss . Many householders cover themselves by wrapping foods — especially foods that can be delicate to freeze such as fish — first in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil.
